What Is GEO? A Practical Guide to Generative Engine Optimization

Generative Engine Optimization is how you get your brand cited inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Here is what the research proves works, and how to start.

Ranking on Google is no longer the whole game. Buyers now ask ChatGPT or Perplexity what to use, and if the model does not know you exist, you are invisible at the exact moment a decision is made. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of structuring content so AI tools cite you as a source. The brands that win now are the ones built to be cited, and the research shows exactly how to earn it.

Why GEO is its own discipline now

Search has split into two motions: the old list of blue links, and a new answer the AI writes for you. GEO optimizes for the second one.

The scale is no longer niche. ChatGPT reached close to 800 million weekly active users by late 2025, and OpenAI's Sam Altman said the product was handling 2.5 billion prompts per day as of mid 2025. On Google, AI Overviews now appear on a large and growing share of results, by one November 2025 dataset more than 60% of US queries, though estimates vary by method and query type.

The behavior shift matters more than the reach. A Pew Research Center study found that when an AI summary appeared, users very rarely clicked the sources it cited. Bain's consumer survey found that about 80% of people now rely on zero-click results for at least 40% of searches, which it estimates cuts organic web traffic by 15 to 25%. The link is no longer guaranteed. The citation is the prize.

Traditional SEO optimizes for crawlability, keywords, and link authority. Those still matter, but they do not decide whether an AI cites you. GEO adds a distinct layer: being selected as a trustworthy source when a model synthesizes its answer. As Andreessen Horowitz put it, GEO is fast becoming the system of record for how brands interact with the AI layer.

How AI engines actually pick their sources

AI search tools like Perplexity and ChatGPT use a retrieval-augmented generation pipeline. They search the live web, pull a set of candidate pages, and use a language model to synthesize an answer with citations.

Three factors decide which pages get pulled into that answer.

Relevance to the exact question. Your page must answer the question in plain words, fast. Most brand sites describe themselves in first-person marketing language ("we offer," "our approach") instead of answering what buyers actually type. A page that opens with the answer to "how do I automate client onboarding" beats one that opens with a mission statement.

Authority signals. Models favor sources with established credibility: links from trusted domains, mentions across other reputable sites, and consistent coverage of a topic. This is why third-party presence matters. Reddit and Wikipedia remain among the most-cited domains across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode.

Extractability. This is the factor most specific to GEO. AI tools prefer content where a clean, self-contained answer is easy to lift. A sentence that states the answer first ("The standard review period is 30 days") is more extractable than a paragraph that builds to it. Clear headings, numbered steps, and tables all help.

One caution: the platforms do not behave the same. An audit of 680 million citations found only about 11% overlap between the sources ChatGPT and Perplexity cite, and Perplexity cites far more sources per answer (around 22) than ChatGPT (around 6), by one analysis. Optimizing for one engine does not cover the rest.

SEO vs AEO vs GEO: the practical difference

These are not competing strategies. They are three layers of one search presence, and the lower layers support the higher ones.

The layers feed each other. Roughly 40% of pages cited in Google AI Overviews also rank in the top 10 organic results, so strong SEO still earns you a seat at the AI table. La Rouge's Search Presence service covers all three layers, because optimizing for only one leaves visibility on the table.

What the research says actually works

The founding study on this is "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," by researchers from Princeton, IIT Delhi, and Georgia Tech, published at KDD 2024. They ran roughly 10,000 queries through AI search systems, tested nine content tactics, and measured each one's effect on visibility inside AI answers. The headline: the right changes can lift visibility by up to 40%.

The tactics that worked, and the ones that did not, are specific:

Format matters too. An analysis of 30 million AI citations found that comparative listicles earn the largest share of citations, around 32.5%, ahead of standard blog posts. And there is a real payoff for getting cited: organic click-through rate drops sharply when an AI Overview appears, but pages cited inside that Overview see about 35% higher click-through than standard organic results.

The content traits that earn citations

Lead with statistics. This is the single highest-leverage GEO move. Replace "most businesses improve within six months" with a sourced number. Specific, cited figures read as more credible to both humans and models.

Answer first, then explain. Models extract sentences, they do not read top to bottom. Start every section with the answer, then add evidence and nuance. That structural inversion is the core GEO habit.

Be entity-clear. An entity is a named thing: a person, product, organization, or concept a model can recognize and cross-reference. Name your services, sectors, and differentiators consistently across every page so a stable profile of your brand forms.

Cite real authority. Linking to peer-reviewed research, government data, or recognized reports signals that your content is grounded. This matters most in regulated sectors like healthcare, fintech, and public services, where models are more conservative about who they cite.

Earn third-party mentions. Citations are not only on-page. BrightEdge found ChatGPT mentions brands about 3.2x more often than it formally cites them, so presence in communities, reviews, and reputable publications feeds what the model already knows.

The technical foundations GEO needs

GEO does not work on content a crawler cannot reach. The baseline is the same as SEO: a crawlable, fast, semantically structured site.

  • Structured data. JSON-LD schema, especially Article, FAQPage, and Organization, tells crawlers which parts of your content answer which questions. For serious GEO this is foundational, not optional.

  • Crawl access. JavaScript that crawlers do not render, or a misconfigured robots file, quietly wastes all of your GEO work.

  • Page speed and indexing. Slow pages consume crawl budget. Poor Core Web Vitals lead to thinner indexing, which means newer pages may never get indexed, and uncrawled pages cannot be cited.

How to measure GEO

GEO measurement is younger than SEO measurement. There is no Search Console for AI citations yet, so combine a few signals.

  • Manual prompt testing. Regularly ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode the questions your buyers ask, and record whether you are cited. Slow, but direct.

  • Share of voice and citation tracking. A growing set of GEO metrics, from AI referral traffic to brand mentions and share of voice in AI answers, can be tracked with emerging tools.

  • AI Overview impressions in Search Console. Rising impressions on AI surfaces suggest your content is being used as source material.

  • Branded search volume. When people see you cited in AI answers, some search your brand directly. Tracking branded search over 6 to 12 months alongside publishing is a rough proxy for citation impact.

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

It is a fair question, and founders ask it directly. One marketer on Reddit asked whether anyone is "actually doing Generative Engine Optimization, or is it just SEO with a fancy name," and another noted that "most of the advice I've seen so far on GEO is basically just the same advice you get for SEO."

The honest answer: GEO shares foundations with SEO, but the target and the measurement are different. SEO earns a ranked link. GEO earns a sentence inside an answer, and it is measured by citations and mentions, not positions. The overlap is real. The new layer is also real.

Your GEO quick-start checklist

  • Test 10 to 20 buyer questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity, and note who gets cited

  • Map each gap as a content gap, a structure gap, or a technical gap

  • Rewrite your top pages to answer the question in the first sentence

  • Add a sourced statistic to every substantive claim

  • Link out to authoritative research and data where it strengthens a point

  • Add Article, FAQPage, and Organization schema

  • Confirm pages are crawlable, fast, and fully indexed

  • Build third-party presence in the communities and publications your buyers trust

  • Set a steady publishing cadence and track citations monthly

FAQ

What is Generative Engine Optimization?

GEO is the practice of structuring content so AI search tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cite your brand as a source when they generate an answer. Where SEO earns a ranked link, GEO earns a mention inside the answer itself.

Does SEO still matter for GEO?

Yes. SEO is the foundation GEO builds on. Crawlability, site speed, and authority all feed AI citation, and around 40% of pages cited in Google AI Overviews also rank in the top 10 organic results. GEO adds a layer focused on extraction and citation, it does not replace SEO.

How do AI engines decide who to cite?

They retrieve candidate pages from the live web, then favor sources that are directly relevant to the question, carry authority signals, and present clean, self-contained answers that are easy to extract. Statistics and authoritative citations measurably increase the odds.

Which content earns the most AI citations?

Research on AI citations points to comparative listicles, how-to guides, and FAQs, all written answer-first with sourced statistics. Standard, undifferentiated blog posts perform worse.

How is GEO different from AEO?

AEO targets answer boxes and snippets inside a results page, using concise, schema-marked answers. GEO targets the synthesized answer an AI model writes from multiple sources. They overlap heavily, and most teams should treat SEO, AEO, and GEO as one connected strategy.

How do I measure GEO if there is no ranking report?

Combine manual prompt testing, citation and share-of-voice tracking tools, AI Overview impressions in Search Console, and branded search volume over time. No single metric is definitive yet, so triangulate.

Where to start

GEO is not a future discipline. It is a present reality for any brand whose buyers use AI search. The research is clear on what moves the needle: statistics, real citations, answer-first structure, and entity clarity. None of it is hard, but it requires a deliberate shift in how you write and measure. The teams that make that shift now, while the field is young, will lock in citation authority before competitors treat GEO as a priority.
